BEST OF COMPETITION AWARD WON BY SKIDMORE, OWINGS & MERRILL

 

June 4, 2009, Chicago, Il The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) announced that Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP won the coveted Best of Competition in the 36th Annual Interior Design Competition for its project, Cathedral of Christ the Light, Oakland, California.  The winners of the 2009 design competitions, including the 17th Annual Will Ching Design Award, were honored at the IIDA COOL Gala, June 14, 2009 at the Westin Chicago River North.

The Annual Interior Design Competition, established in 1973, was created to recognize outstanding interior design and to encourage new ideas and techniques in the design and furnishings of interior space.  

The winners in the 36th Annual Interior Design Competition were chosen from nearly four hundred projects submitted in the following practice areas: Commercial, Education/Institutional, Government, Healthcare, Hospitality, Residential and Retail.  

In addition to the Best in Competition award captured by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, other winners were Greenhouse Nightclub, New York, NY, Bluarch Architecture + Interiors, New York, NY; Nishimura Restaurant, Shangri-La Hotel, Beijing, China, CL3 Architects Limited, Hong Kong, China; Museum of Tolerance, Los Angeles, CA., Yazdani Studio of Cannon Design, Los Angeles, CA.; Fomari Headquarters, Milan, Italy, Giorgio Borruso Design, Marina Del Rey, CA.; Wing Luke Asian Museum, Seattle WA., Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects, Seattle, WA.  

The design team for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill included Rae Quigley, Craig W. Hartman, Gene Schnair, Mark Sarkisian, Keigh Boswell and Raymond Kuca. 

Gallery More North, New York, a gallery/exhibition space devoted to the best of contemporary Nordic art and design, designed by KOKO Architecture + Design of New York, N.Y. was chosen as the winner of the 17th Annual Will Ching Design Competition, which honors outstanding commercial design by firms of five or fewer individuals.  

Judges for the competition included Suzanne Tick, President, Suzanne Tick Inc.; D.B. Kim, Principal Designer, D.B.Kim, Inc.; and Eria Dogg Ingjaldsdottir, Associate IIDA, Principal, Minarc. The judging was held in February 2009 in Chicago.  

All winning projects, not previously published, will be featured in the NeoCon issue of Interior Design, the publishing partner for the competitions.
