GORDON SEGAL HONORED WITH 2008 STAR AWARD

June 8, 2008, Chicago, IL – The International Interior Design Association’s International Honors and Awards were presented at IIDA’s Annual Meeting on Sunday, June 8, 2008 by Association President, John Mack, FIIDA, AIA. Three awards were given this year: the Star Award, the Distinguished Leadership Award and the Titan Award.

The IIDA Star Award recognizing outstanding contributions to the interior design profession was presented to Gordon Segal, Co-Founder and CEO of Crate and Barrel. He has long been an advocate of design and retail excellence. Most recently he and his wife Carole, his Crate and Barrel co-founder, have endowed the Institute for Design at Northwestern University. The Institute has been created to be multi-disciplinary, marrying programs in the School of Engineering with those in the School of Management and within the Master’s of Product Development program with the goal of creating a more design-aware and design-literate population in the corporate world. Segal commented, “Design is the largest differentiator and largest competitive advantage that the United States has to offer. The Institute for Design will support and innovate a creative design education for those who choose to innovate and create a viable future for US business.” The primary goal of the Institute is to cross-link disciplines—art, architecture, design, business, engineering, medicine, communication and the humanities, around the common objective of design sensitivity and awareness

The IIDA Distinguished Leadership Award recognizes outstanding contributions to IIDA or the design community by an IIDA Professional Member. This year’s award was presented to Joe Pettipas, IIDA, IDC, ASID, ISP, LEED AP. With over two decades of experience, Pettipas has a deep understanding of the challenges faced today within the corporate, hospitality, retail and marketing areas of the built environment. As Director of Interior Design and Leader of the Hospitality and Retail Focus Group at HOK Canada, Pettipas’ team has completed several large-scale projects in countries as diverse as the United Arab Emirates, Doha, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, China, Indonesia, Mexico, Canada and the United States. He has also taught at the School of Interior Design, Ryerson University where his specialty was in courses in the study of color and color psychology. In addition to Pettipas’ industry leadership on the CIDA Board, he has been a great advocate of partnership opportunities between IIDA and ARIDO.

The IIDA Titan Award recognizes outstanding service to the Association by an IIDA Corporate Member, media partner or company or individual from a design-related profession. This year’s award is presented to the Shaw Contract Group, a flooring provider to the commercial market known for its values to diversity of its work force and accountability to clients, communities and the environment. The Shaw Contract Group’s commitment to the profession and to sustainability is evident through their numerous awards and recognitions, including the 2007 Fast Company "Fast 50" list, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Presidential Green Chemistry Award and the 2005 U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Evergreen Award in the Furnishings category. The Shaw Contract Group has demonstrated its dedication to the Association through their IIDA Corporate membership for fourteen years. Shaw has been an active participant in IIDA’s Annual Industry Roundtable since its inception, as well as a sponsor of the Association’s annual gala for the past twelve years. Recently, Shaw contributed carpeting for the new IIDA Headquarters.
