- What is your favorite example of great design?
- The Barcelona Pavilion, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, was constructed as the German Pavilion for the 1929 International Exposition. Mies also designed the ‘Barcelona’ chairs and stools which were intended to be used as thrones for the Spanish King and Queen when the German Ambassador received them. Though designed to be temporary, the structure was made of permanent materials: steel, glass, marble, and travertine. There was no other furniture or fixtures, with the exception of a single sculpture. The building was dismantled in 1930 but it was rebuilt on the original site in 1986.
- Who is your favorite designer?
- It’s hard to select a favorite. I tend to prefer those who create interest by mixing different periods.
- If you weren't a designer, what would you be doing?
- An archaeologist. Surprisingly I loved science in school and am fascinated with the study of human cultures. The added benefit of travel would be nice too!
