June 14, 2010, Chicago, IL – On Sunday, June 14, 300 guests celebrated the Interior Design profession and the commencement of NeoCon at COOL Gala 2010, the International Interior Design Association’s (IIDA) black tie awards celebration and premier NeoCon kickoff event, held once again at the elegant Westin Chicago River North Hotel.

Beginning at 7 pm, the doors were open for guests to mix, mingle and enjoy cocktails and hors d' oeuvres. It was rainy outside, but the mood indoors was fun and spirited. In a new twist to the annual event, this year’s guests were treated to a special display of one-of-a-kind fashions created by IIDA Chapters from across the U.S. 15 chapters’ creations from signature fashion shows were displayed at NeoCon, and seven were chosen to be worn by live models at the gala. IIDA staff and friends modeled the fashion while guests were invited to take photos with the models and view the craftsmanship up close. Once guests were seated inside the ballroom, Al Kabus, Industry IIDA, President of the Mohawk Group, announced each model and the design team of the featured dresses. A special thanks goes to the Mohawk Group for their generous role as Host Sponsor for the evening, in addition to the 15 other sponsors who offered financial support for this year’s gala.

Besides the excitement created by the fashion, another darling of the evening was Michael Green of mgb ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN Inc., who won the coveted Best of Competition award in the 37th Annual Interior Design Competition for its project, LYNNsteven, a retail store in Vancouver, Canada. Green won over the crowd when he shared stories of economic creativity, finding a source on Craig’s List for 57,000 books, who so desired to have the tomes out of his home that he sorted the books by height, so that Green could fashion them into decorative, innovative column encasements. Green’s award followed the presentation of all the 37th Annual Interior Design Competition awards, as well as the 18th Annual Will Ching Award. The awards were followed by dinner and dancing.
