Zita Cobb grew up on Fogo Island, Newfoundland. After a successful business career away, she returned home to find that the population had fallen drastically with the collapse of the cod fishery. Feeling compelled to act; she and her brothers founded the Shorefast Foundation, a charity and social enterprise that uses design, architecture, art, craft, and food to invigorate the island’s economy and culture. The Foundation leveraged initial investments to create culturally-rich, community-owned economic assets, including the world-class Fogo Island Inn, Fogo Island Arts, and Fogo Island Shop, which sells furniture and textiles hand-crafted on Fogo Island. She remains guided by the belief that design and architecture have the potential to add to quality of life, beyond form and function.
